AVID

WELCOME TO AVID!

AVID is a fourth- through twelfth-grade system to prepare students in the academic middle for four-year college eligibility.  It has a proven track record in bringing out the best in students, and in closing the achievement gap.  AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.

AVID targets students in the academic middle - B, C, and even D students - who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard.  These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential.  Typically, they will be the first in their families to attend college, and many are from low-income or minority families.  AVID pulls these students out of their unchallenging courses and puts them on the college track: acceleration instead of remediation.

Not only are students enrolled in their school's toughest classes, such as honors and Advanced Placement, but also in the AVID elective.  For one period a day, they learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable.  Their self-images improve, and they become academically successful leaders and role models for other students.

Now Hiring AVID Tutors

We are now hiring AVID tutors at Chavez High School.  We have positions available Monday through Thursday from 7:16 am to 8:49 am and 10:32 am to 12:05 pm. We will work around your schedule.  Below is a list of things you must complete to be considered for a position.

1. You must go to the SUSD District office (701 N. Madison, Stockton, CA 95202) and pick up a Substitute Emplioyee Application Packet from the front desk - tell them you are interested in being an AVID tutor. Fill out the application.
2. Come and see me at Chavez between the hours of 7:16 am and 10:27 am (if possible). Go to the office and sign in as a visitor. Bring your application packet. Bring your college course schedule and proof that you have taken/are taking college level English and Math of some sort. After meeting with you I will make a recommendation for you to turn in with your packet.

DO NOT DO STEPS 3 AND 4 PRIOR TO MEETING WITH ME:

3. You will need to get a TB skin test and have proof to turn in with your application. You can go the the Healthy Start Clinic at Edison High School (1425 S. Center Street, Stockton, CA 95206) after making an appointment (you must meet with me first).
4. You will need to get fingerprinted at the SUSD Police Department (1326 N San Joaquin Street, Stockton, CA 95202). Call (209) 933-7085 to make an appointment. Appointments are from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm and 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm. (There may be funds available to pay for this but you must meet with me first.)

5. Turn the packet in at the District office. Application will have to be approved by the Board. We will notify you when everything is approved.

Thank you and I look forward to working with you soon. You may forward this information to anyone who is interested in being a tutor. We will only hire approximately 7 tutors so get these steps done as soon as possible.
